Business Continuity Exercises

Prove the plan before you need it, with scenarios built around your own organisation.

A plan is only as good as the people who use it.

Exercising turns a written plan into practised capability. It shows whether the plan meets its objectives, reveals gaps while there is still time to amend it, and prepares people for what they would actually do. ADVOX designs customised incident scenarios, continuity exercises and tests in line with ISO 22301 and the BCI Good Practice Guidelines (GPG 7.0).

Every exercise is shaped around your organisation’s own risks, so the people taking part work through situations that feel real to them. This work sits inside ADVOX’s wider business continuity consultancy and supports your operational resilience.

Three ways to test a plan.

The right type depends on what you want to learn and how far your plans have come. Many organisations build up from one to the next.

1

Plan review

A structured read-through of the plan with the people who own it, checking it covers the right objectives and spotting gaps on paper.

2

Tabletop exercise

A facilitated discussion in which the team talks a scenario through step by step and tests who would do what.

3

Simulation

The most realistic test, where the team responds to a developing scenario much as it would on the day.

Scenarios we can build exercises around.

Choose a theme that matches your risks, or ask ADVOX to shape a scenario of your own.

Cyber attack

A phishing email leads to ransomware, and key systems go dark.

Pandemic

A large share of staff cannot attend work for an extended period.

Physical disruption

A fire or another incident closes an office or a site.

Natural disaster

Extreme heat or flooding disrupts a facility, a route or a workforce.

Power outage

A utility or data centre outage cuts power to critical operations.

Network outage

Connectivity fails, and teams cannot reach systems or each other.

Emergency communication

The organisation must reach staff and stakeholders quickly while the situation keeps changing.

Rehearse the response

See ADVOX’s Incident Response and Crisis Management Simulations.

Each scenario is shaped around your organisation’s own risks. To build the skill in-house, see the BCI course Designing and Delivering Effective Exercises.

From design to debrief.

Each exercise follows the same simple path, so everyone knows what to expect and what comes out of it.

01

Agree the aim

ADVOX works with you to agree what the exercise should prove, who should take part and which plans it will test.

02

Design the scenario

A scenario is built around your own risks and critical activities, with a storyline that develops as the exercise goes on.

03

Run the exercise

ADVOX facilitates, online or in person, so the team can test decisions, roles and communication without live consequences.

04

Debrief and follow up

The team reviews what worked and what did not, and the findings and actions are recorded so the plan can be improved.
