BCMS Software and Automation

What business continuity software does, how to review the tools you use, and the products two published sources name, in one independent guide.

Software keeps a programme current. It does not replace one.

A continuity programme depends on information that changes all the time: who does what, which systems support which services, who to call and what to do first. Spreadsheets and documents struggle to keep up. Dedicated software and automation can hold that information in one place, remind owners to update it, and put the right plan in front of the right person when an incident starts.

The tool is only as useful as the programme behind it. Plans, ownership, exercising and standards such as ISO 22301 still come first. This page is general information to help you ask better questions. It sits beside ADVOX’s independent BCMS software and automation reviews.

ADVOX is independent of all software suppliers. Nothing here is a recommendation, a ranking or an endorsement of any product.

What BCMS software and automation can do.

Gartner describes this kind of tool as the main way organisations manage every phase of the business continuity life cycle, from planning to activating a crisis response. In practice that comes down to six jobs.

1

Risk and availability assessment

Record what could interrupt important activities and how likely and serious it would be.

2

Business impact analysis

Capture what each activity needs, how long it can be down, and what depends on it.

3

Dependency mapping

Link processes to the people, systems, suppliers and sites they rely on, so weak points show up early.

4

Recovery plan management

Write, review, approve and update plans in one place, with clear owners and review dates.

5

Exercises and crisis management

Run exercises, activate plans, assign tasks and keep communications moving during an incident.

6

Metrics and reporting

Show leaders how well the programme is working, what is overdue and where the gaps are.

Two sources, two ways of drawing the line.

Lists of “business continuity software” do not always mean the same thing. The two sources used on this page draw the boundary differently.

Gartner Peer Insights

Groups products as business continuity management programme solutions: tools that manage the programme itself, from risk and impact analysis to plans, exercises and crisis activation. Its category page shows products with customer reviews.

Solutions Review

Publishes a wider list under the heading business continuity software. It mixes programme and resilience platforms with backup, replication and disaster recovery tools that protect data and keep IT services available.

Both kinds of tool can matter, and they answer different questions. A programme platform helps you decide what must keep running and how. A recovery tool helps you bring systems back. We list them in separate groups below for that reason.

What to look at before you buy, keep or replace.

These are the questions ADVOX asks when it reviews the software and automation an organisation uses or is considering. They apply whichever product is on the table.

1

Fit with your programme

Does it follow the way you work and the standards you follow, including ISO 22301 and NCEMA 7000?

2

Impact analysis data

How is it captured, who keeps it current, and can you get it back out when you need it?

3

Plans and ownership

Is every plan owned, reviewed and easy to find, including on a phone during an incident?

4

Incident activation

Can the right people be alerted, given tasks and kept informed without leaving the tool?

5

Reporting

Do the dashboards answer the questions your leaders and regulators actually ask?

6

Adoption and integration

Will people use it, and does it connect with your other systems such as HR, IT service management and risk tools?

An ADVOX review gives you findings, gaps and improvement recommendations, and a view on whether to keep, improve or replace your current tooling. It is independent and does not recommend a product. Read the full description in BCMS software and automation reviews.

Software products in the published lists.

The products below are named by Solutions Review, by Gartner Peer Insights, or by both. Each name links to the vendor’s own website. Each line is ADVOX’s own plain-language summary of what kind of tool it is.

This is not an ADVOX recommendation and not a complete market list. The order is not a ranking. ADVOX is independent of all software suppliers, and has no view on which product suits you. ADVOX does not copy ratings, review scores or review text from either source.

Gartner’s category page shows 20 of 36 listed products without signing in. ADVOX used only the products visible there whose description fits the category and whose vendor website it could open. Five of the 20 products shown are left out, because Gartner describes them as another kind of software or ADVOX could not verify the vendor website. Castellan Solutions and Riskonnect appear as the sources list them. Castellan’s own website now opens on a Riskonnect page titled “Castellan is now part of Riskonnect”, and the Veritas web address now opens on Cohesity’s website.
